What was your first telecope?
Toyed around with buying one for years as an adult, finally did so not too long ago. My first adult, researched purchase was an XT8, an 8 inch dobsonial reflector. I also picked up an extremely cheap (yay amazon clearance sale!) small refractor to go along with it.

What you are seeing is probably the focal length of the telescope. That is the overall length that the scope uses to deliver the light from its first contact with an optical surface to its fixed focus point inside the scope. This is a fixed number for each scope, and it is based on the way that the scope is built. It is an important number, since it is used to calculate things like magnification and resolution. It has no bearing on the distance that the scope can actually be used to see. Virtually any scope (and even your eyes alone) can be used to see millions of light years into space. That is not defined in millimeters. A focal length of 1000 mm is not unusual. It sounds like a decent sized reflector.

Re: What was your first telecope?
The earliest evidence of working telescopes were the refracting telescopes that appeared in the Netherlands in 1608. Their development is credited to three individuals: Hans Lippershey and Zacharias Janssen, who were spectacle makers in Middelburg, and Jacob Metius of Alkmaar. Galileo greatly improved upon these designs the following year.
